Fine Wine Enthusiasts Group - Founding Member residing in Triptych
Lovers of fine wine residing in Triptych are warmly invited to participate in, or record their interest in, a recently formed Melbourne wine enthusiasts group.
Background - formation of the interest group
The main origins of the interest group are an online wine forum, Auswine, and an equivalent interest group in Sydney – Grape Mates – of which I was also an inaugural member prior to moving to Melbourne for work eight months ago.
Who’d Enjoy being part of this Group?
This is a new social (non-commercial) group for those who love fine wine (and – where applicable - their less wine-obsessed partners). ‘Fine’ refers to wines that stand above the run of the mill drop. We’ll be sharing good to great wines and exploring a variety of wines (eg of ages, styles, varietals & geographic origins). The group will be welcoming towards those new to a love of fine wine and without a lot of wine knowledge. Judging by the Sydney, Grape Mates experience, many members will have substantial stocks of knowledge and aged wines, and will gladly share them with newer enthusiasts. The group norms will include intelligent and light hearted observations on non-wine issues. The wine that will be tasted will not be limited to wines with a retail price of $80 and above – although many such wines will be tasted in some events. For the majority of events, many wines tasted and enjoyed will have a retail price in the range of $35 to $70.
There’s unlikely to be membership fees or formal governance.
What Types of Activities will be undertaken by the Group?
The theme for the first function, held at our former residence in the Eureka Building, was ‘BYO a favourite French wine’. Different wine- and food-related interests and event types can be supported. My wife, Kerry, and I are just as keen on fine food as wine, and love good dinner party conversations. Others will be keener on simple wine tastings, with less emphasis on food and socialising. The Sydney functions – or those hosted by members – have included ultra-premium wine dinners, Xmas dinners and other general fine food dinners, and many tastings to a theme. A bit of co-operative buying and sourcing has happened too.
